Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is usually thought of as a conscious knowledge of one’s character, feelings, motives, and desires. It is the ability to know what's going on in our head, our heart, and our gut as we engage in the inner and outer activities of our daily lives. To be able to do this allows us to live a conscious life. It is a real and necessary achievement for us as human beings.  We can’t be honest with ourselves or others about things we don’t know about.

This level of self-awareness involves knowing about the multiplicitous nature of our character(s), feelings, motives, and desires. We can have mixed feelings, conflicting motives, and multiple desires. This is the nature of our personality. It contains many selves. This last characteristic Is quite normal and does not mean that we have multiple personality disorder. One of our tasks as humans is to integrate all of this diversity into a unified working whole. We each need to develop a community leader for our many parts. The role of this leader is to support community members, helping them to heal when necessary, and to develop their potential, and to work together as a team.

An interesting development occurs when we have done enough of this integration work. Another level of Self-awareness begins to emerge. This is the awareness of a greater Self. The underlying dynamic throughout this Self is unity and a seamless connection with all that it contains. This Self is what contains All That Is. For many people this comes with a deep opening of the heart. Interestingly, whereas our personalities are very different from one person to another, the Self is the same. There is one Self that we all share.

Through this Self we are connected to the infinite and all of its  expressions-- infinite love, infinite peace, infinite creativity. When the community leader that we have developed within ourselves begins to partner with this Self, our lives can change in profound ways both internally and externally. This is when both of our feet are planted firmly on our spiritual path. We no longer walk through our lives as  just humans. We walk as awakening spiritual beings aware that we are connected to the universe and each other in profound and wonderful ways. A whole new adventure begins.

Exercise: Stimulating awareness of the Self

Begin to gently challenge your identity as simply a physical being. You do not do this as a thought or a concept but as an awareness practice: Imagine that outline of your body expanding out and including that area that is about 4 to 6 inches beyond your skin. Practice this expanded awareness of who you are. Feel how you are more spacious. Perhaps you will notice new energy or light that is available to you.

Try to do this four or five times a day for a few minutes, feeling your expanded Self. You will be training yourself to include your light body as part of your felt definition of yourself. Enjoy this adventure for there is much to be gained by it. Try not to have any pictures of what you will learn. Let your system show you.
